St. Mary of The Lake School

St. Mary of the Lake School first opened its doors on September 8, 1964, with a total enrollment of 153 students. The school included Grades 1-6 under the supervision of Father Wischmeyer. The faculty was comprised of four Sisters of St. Francis from Oldenburg, Indiana. They were Sisters Immaculata, Magdaline, Joan of Arc and Paulita. Smith and Becker of South Bend, Indiana, were the architects for the building which cost $180,000.

The St. Mary of the Lake Home-School Association was established in 1964 as a non-profit organization. The purpose of the group is to bring a closer cooperation between home and school, to bring educational information to parents, to promote a correct understanding of their rights and duties, to enlist the aid and assistance of parents in those areas which affect the education of their children as laid down by the Diocesan Philosophy of Education and to raise funds to benefit the school. Over the years, enrollment has ranged from 104 in 1974 to 231 in 1967. From 1966 to 1968, St. Mary of the Lake School expanded to include the Seventh and Eighth Grades, but dropped back in 1969.

In 1975, preschool and kindergarten were added to St. Mary of the Lake School's program under the Kaleidoscope Preschool and Childcare Center. In 1996/97, St. Mary's moved 6th grade and added 7th and 8th grades to the St. Mary of the Assumption campus in Three Oaks, Michigan. Grades preschool through 5th remained on St. Mary's New Buffalo Campus.

In 2003, our new addition including a library/media center, gymnasim, art/music room, three middle school classrooms, cafeteria and performing arts stage was completed bringing our 6th through 8th grade students back to the New Buffalo campus.

The fall of 2008 saw and enrollment of 142 students from preschool through 8th grade. Presently, Kathleen Kelly is serving as the principal. With God's help, St. Mary of the Lake Parish will continue to be a thriving, growing, community of Faith.
